The Sacred Art of Joss Sticks: Why I Choose Traditional Hand-Rolled Incense
Share
There's something deeply grounding about lighting a joss stick before a meeting. As the fragrant smoke curls upward, it's as though the veil between worlds grows thinner, creating sacred space for the messages that want to come through.
If you've ever had a meeting with me—whether online or in person—you'll know that incense is an essential part of my practice. But not just any incense. I'm particular about what I burn, and there's good reason for it.
What Are Joss Sticks?
Joss sticks—a term I've always preferred to the more generic 'incense sticks'—have a rich history that spans thousands of years. The word 'joss' comes from the Portuguese 'deos' (meaning god), which evolved into the pidgin English term used throughout Asia to describe anything related to worship and spirituality.
These slender sticks of compressed aromatic materials have been used in spiritual practices across cultures for millennia. From ancient temples in India and China to modern meditation spaces, joss sticks have served as bridges between the physical and spiritual realms, purifying energy and elevating consciousness.
Hand-Rolled vs. Dipped: Why It Matters
Not all incense is created equal, and once you understand the difference, you'll never go back.
Traditional hand-rolled joss sticks are crafted using time-honoured methods. Natural resins, herbs, wood powders, and essential oils are carefully blended and hand-rolled onto bamboo sticks. The fragrance comes from the materials themselves—sandalwood powder, frankincense resin, crushed herbs—creating a pure, authentic scent that burns cleanly and evenly.
Dipped incense, on the other hand, takes a shortcut. A plain stick is simply dipped into synthetic fragrance oils. The result? A harsh, often chemical smell that can be overwhelming rather than uplifting. The burn is inconsistent, and the energy it creates feels... artificial. When you're working with Spirit, authenticity matters.
I choose hand-rolled traditional incense because the energy is different. You can feel it. The scent is richer, more complex, more alive. It honours the ancient practices these fragrances were born from.
My Favourite Brand: Satya
While I have a collection of incense from various makers, Satya remains my absolute favourite. This Indian brand has been crafting traditional hand-rolled incense for generations, and their quality is unmatched.
The incense you see in the photo represents my most-used Satya fragrances—the ones I reach for again and again:

Sandalwood is my absolute favourite. It's grounding, calming, and creates the most beautiful sacred space. I use it for almost every reading. There's a warmth to sandalwood that feels like coming home—it centres me and helps create that peaceful, protected energy needed for spiritual work.
Frankincense comes in a close second. This ancient resin has been used in spiritual ceremonies for thousands of years, and for good reason. It elevates the energy, purifies the space, and seems to amplify intuitive connection. When I need to go deeper or connect with higher guidance, frankincense is my go-to.
White Sage is perfect for cleansing and clearing. Before readings, especially when working with spirit communication, I'll burn white sage to clear any stagnant energy and create a fresh, clean slate for the messages to come through.
Choosing the Right Fragrance for the Moment
Just as I intuitively select which oracle cards to use in a reading, I also choose my incense based on what's needed in the moment. Different fragrances carry different energies and serve different purposes.
Cinnamon brings warmth and energy, perfect for meditation when I need to feel grounded yet energised. The spicy, comforting scent helps me centre myself and creates a focused atmosphere for deep spiritual work.
Rose is all about opening the heart. Its gentle, loving energy is beautiful for meditation and for creating a soft, compassionate space. When I need to connect with the energy of love and healing, rose is what I reach for.
Each fragrance has its own personality, its own gift to offer. Over time, you develop relationships with these scents—you know which one will support you in meditation, which will help you focus, which will comfort you when you need grounding.
The Ancient History of Incense
The use of incense stretches back over 5,000 years. Ancient Egyptians burned frankincense and myrrh in their temples, believing the smoke carried prayers to the gods. In India and China, incense became central to Buddhist and Hindu practices, used to purify spaces, honour deities, and support meditation.
The word 'perfume' itself comes from the Latin 'per fumum'—meaning 'through smoke.' Our ancestors understood something profound: that scent has the power to shift consciousness, to create sacred space, to connect us with something greater than ourselves.
When I light a joss stick before a meeting, I'm participating in this ancient tradition. I'm honouring the countless spiritual practitioners who came before me, who understood that the simple act of burning sacred herbs and resins could transform ordinary space into holy ground.
Why Traditional Matters
In a world of shortcuts and synthetic substitutes, choosing traditional hand-rolled incense is a small act of reverence. It's a commitment to quality, to authenticity, to honouring the old ways that have served seekers for millennia.
The difference is tangible. Hand-rolled incense burns with intention. The fragrance unfolds gradually, revealing layers of scent that synthetic oils simply can't replicate. The energy it creates is clean, pure, supportive of spiritual work rather than distracting from it.
When you come for a meeting, you'll notice the incense burning. It's not just atmosphere—it's part of the sacred container I create for our time together. It signals to Spirit that this is holy work. It clears the space of anything that doesn't serve. It helps both of us settle into that receptive, open state where guidance can flow freely.
Creating Your Own Sacred Space
You don't need to be a medium or spiritual practitioner to benefit from traditional incense. Anyone can use it to transform their space, support their meditation practice, or simply create moments of peace in a busy day.
If you're new to incense, I'd recommend starting with sandalwood or frankincense—both are gentle, grounding, and universally loved. Look for hand-rolled varieties from reputable brands like Satya. Light your joss stick, take a few deep breaths, and notice how the space shifts.
You might be surprised at how something so simple can be so transformative.
The smoke rises, carrying with it our intentions, our prayers, our openness to guidance. It's been doing so for thousands of years. And it will continue long after we're gone—this beautiful, sacred practice of burning fragrant offerings to honour the divine.
